Many people like to include a lot of jargon in their writing because they sound cool. Jargon make them look like they are professional and expert but for average readers — who are their target audience, this is a major turnoff.

Articles that are written in conversational tone gets more readership because of the personality, warmness, and readability. Of course, there are exceptions when you write articles for highly technical engineers. But most of the time, even if you write at the fifth grade level, people don’t notice that.

They appreciate it if they can read the articles faster, which is next to impossible for academic writing. And avoiding jargon allows you to write articles with a better flow when the audiences read them.

However, how could you avoid jargon in your article?

It isn’t always possible to do so especially if you need to mention the name of the technology or other things. If that is the case, explain the term immediately after that so the readers can keep reading without losing the meaning. Don’t let the readers stop just to think or find what it means.

If you have invented a method to grow roses in a garden easily, you may name the “system” but make sure you explain about what is is before you use the term all over the places.

An article is unlike a book, where you can include a full chapter for glossaries. It is important that the article itself is independent entity. You want them to read to the end of the article and take action based on what you have to offer in the resource box.

Don’t assume that people understand jargon. You may use the term everyday that you are too close to it but remember that not all people will understand it. Make sure you write conversationally and pay attention to jargon so you can avoid them. People find the latter more compelling because it helps them understand what’s going on.
