Now this offers some interesting possibilities regarding traffic promotion. If you can make your bookmarks public, so that everybody else using the relevant keywords, or tags, can find your bookmarks, what are you going to bookmark first? Yes, you’ve got it! Your own website and web pages of course! You tag each page on your site with the keywords relevant to the page, and not only those that are registered with the social bookmarking site will find your web pages, but also anyone surfing the internet with those keywords, since you have the bookmarks ‘public’, meaning that they can be viewed not only by the whole social bookmarking community, but also by everybody using the internet.
As long as you provide content on your web page relevant to the ‘tag’ you have used to bookmark it with, then you are not spamming. The visitors to your web pages will be targeted since it is they who used the keywords to reach you. It is just as if they had reached you by means of a search engine, and social bookmarking sites are becoming so popular that if you are not using them you are blocking your business from a huge potential customer base.
It is estimated that more people are now using social bookmarking sites to find information than are using Google. This is due the ‘rubbish’ sites that are now proliferating on the internet in spite of the efforts of the search engines to down-list spammy web pages. A lot of this is due to the excess influence that links have on Google listings. It is still possible for content-free sites to be listed in number one position for a keyword simply due to the number of links they have managed to secure.
