It may not be the most serious problem in the world, but trust me, impacted earwax can be very annoying if not treated. The symptoms are usually very mild, but left untreated can reach a point where you’re convinced that you’re losing your hearing. In this article, we’re going to briefly explain what all that earwax is actually for, how it gets impacted and what you can do for it if you find you’re suffering from this condition.
Earwax is actually critical for protecting your inner ear. What it is, is a normal secretion from the cells that actually line your ear. It’s function is to lubricate, protect and clean the ear. Without this protection, we are susceptible to serious injury. Well, some people just happen to accumulate more earwax than others, just like some people accumulate more plaque on their teeth than others no matter how much they brush. What happens, if this buildup isn’t treated before it gets out of hand, is that it begins to cake up in the ear and harden. This can ultimately cause obstruction of the ear canal.
Usually, there are no symptoms when this occurs, so you won’t even know if it’s a problem. However, in extreme cases, you may feel pain or dullness in your ear. Some people hear a thumping or a ringing. And in very extreme cases, there may be an impairment of hearing and you may become dizzy from the impaction.
There are many ways to treat this condition, but the best treatment is prevention. By simply cleaning the ears each day with a cotton swab gently soaked in hydrogen peroxide, you’ll prevent any build up from occurring. Even after the condition becomes noticeable, this same treatment may be sufficient to break up the impaction.
Another way to loosen the earwax is by simply taking a hot shower in an unventilated bathroom. If no infection is present, your doctor will remove the earwax with a cotton applicator or with some warm water irrigation. Normally, the only time you’ll need to see your doctor is if there is pain in the ear. Otherwise, the treatments mentioned should do the job nicely.
The main thing is not to let the condition go on for too long. Left untreated, impacted earwax can lead to serious hearing problems.
